Wow! There are really not enough hours in the day especially if you are like myself often skimping on sleep to get more done. However sleep happens to be a key factor in ensuring that not only do we perform our best but also look our best! Restful nights are often associated with looking and feeling healthier. Collagen production is accelerated when we sleep and this is essential for slowing down the ageing process. Ideally we should aim to get about 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night in order to look our sparkling best. Beauty sleep is an integral part of any routine and here’s why:
Renew and Restore – Dark circles under the eyes are a first sign of lack of adequate sleep. If you are low on sleep the blood doesn’t flow as well. It collects under the eye and becomes visible as the skin under the eye is so thin. Your body boosts blood flow to the skin when you sleep therefore sleep depravation makes your skin look drab, dull and lifeless. Lack of sleep also gives you an imbalance in your skins natural pH. This in turn can lead to either excessive dryness or acne breakouts. As I’ve mentioned above collagen production is also reduced by lack of sleep.
Maintaining a healthy weight – Look we all know that a clean diet and healthy eating are indeed a sure way to shedding those extra pounds. However if you are getting less than 6 hours of sleep then you are actually working against your weight loss efforts. Unfortunately sleep depravation will stimulate the appetite and also increase cravings for unhealthy foods. It also makes you feel tired and drained which results in less motivation to exercise.
General Attitude – Studies have shown that people who sleep less than 6 hours a night tend to eventually feel run down, irritated and fatigued. Prolonged lack of sleep can in some cases even lead to feelings of depression.
General Health – A good nights sleep is an important building block for your immune system. Lack off sleep can make your body sensitive to infection and limit its ability to fight colds and viruses. Again to maintain optimal health try to sleep for 6 to 8 hours each night.
Brain Boost – Well we all tend to think that burning the midnight oil the night before the meeting or presentation is the way to go! Unfortunately and I say this time and time again to my boys that the extra sleep will be far more effective at keeping you sharp and helping you retain information. Just an extra even hour of rest will speed brain activity and response time which will leave you feeling more prepared and engaged.
So there you have it all the more reasons why you should get more beauty sleep! Please do share your best tips for falling asleep below.
